How the process is supposed to work

The Eastern School Board has released a School Closure Report recommending the immediate closure of 11 schools and hinted at possibly more over the three years.

The School Act is the law that sets the rules that have to be followed when a school is closed. It says there has to be a public consultation period of at least 90 days where people can have their say. That period ends on May 12. Eight public meetings will be held during the consultation period. One for each family of schools and two at the board office.

After that the trustees of the Eastern School Board trustees have to finalize their recommendations by May 31. Those recommendations then go to the Cabinet for final approval.

Two meetings have already been held and the next one is on February 24 at Colonel Gray High School at 7 p.m.

You can also have your say in other ways. From the Eastern School Board website:

Over the next few weeks, a number of options are available to individuals or groups wishing to provide feedback to the report.  Public input will be accepted until 4 p.m. on May 12, 2009.
